New Exhibition! "Made in Ithaca" Celebration Featuring the New "Sonic Sensation"

This winter and spring discover a special collection of "Made in Ithaca" exhibits. This show highlights exhibits from our newest traveling exhibition, "Sonic Sensation," and also brings back some Sciencenter favorites - signature hands-on exhibits that are sure to get you moving, building and exploring.

Showtime! How Low Can Your Voice Go?

Saturday, February 6, 2 p.m.
Elephants can lower their voices to be so baritone that our ears cannot sense their deepest rumbles. Come join us to experience sights and sounds of forest elephants and learn about the science of infrasound with Mya Thompson from Cornell University's Elephant Listening Project.

Tuesday, February 9, 10:30 a.m.
Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to hear the story "Pop: A Book about Bubbles" by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley and to make a bubble wand to take home. Storytime occurs on the second Tuesday of every month at 10:30 a.m.

Winter Recess 2010: Ithaca Loves Teachers

During February break, the Sciencenter will welcome teachers and their families to explore the museum for free as part of a city-wide initiative to honor teachers. Showtime! Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry

Saturday, February 13, 2 p.m.
Celebrate Valentine's Day by discovering the science behind the sweet foods we love! Sciencenter educator John Alvarez del Castillo will present chocolate, vanilla and strawberry plants. Kids will find out how these plants become familiar treat, and will take home a strawberry plant.
Showtime! Fizzy Science

Saturday, February 20, 2 p.m.
Sciencenter staff member BJ Siasoco will explore the states of matter the fun way: by making root beer floats! Kids can observe how BJ concocts the treats (hint: it involves dry ice!) and taste-test the results.

Learn how fresh foods can become houseplants! Sciencenter educator John Alvarez del Castillo will present a variety of produce that can be easily converted to houseplants. Visitors can take home a new houseplant!

Can pollution change the way birds sing? Sara DeLeon of Cornell University will present how common song birds such as Black Capped Chickadees and Song Sparrows change their songs in response to pollution, specifically PCBs.

One of our most beloved local products has some unique physical and chemical properties. Come join Steve Gabriel of Sapsquatch, a local maple syrup producer us we learn about the science behind the annual sap run of the sugar maple. Taste (and experiment!) with maple syrup.

Learn what owls eat with Sciencenter educator John Alvarez del Castillo. Families will dissect real "owl pellets"--the regurgitated fur, bones, and other inedible parts of an owl's diet!

NanoDay at the Sciencenter

Saturday, March 27, 12-4 p.m.
Explore nanoscience and nanotechnology through hands-on activities and family-friendly presentations. Help us build a giant model of a tiny carbon nanotube out of balloons, dress up as a nanoscientist in a head-to-toe "bunny suit," and investigate surprising materials like sand that doesn't get wet and a liquid that acts like a magnet. At 2 p.m., learn about nanotechnology from a Cornell University expert (see below). Admission to the Sciencenter is FREE on NanoDay! NanoDay is cosponsored by the Sciencenter and Cornell University.
