Herkimer Diamonds

This Science Minute was researched and written by Jamie E., of Ithaca, NY.

When is a diamond not a diamond? When it is a Herkimer Diamond! These beautiful quartz crystals are found in Herkimer County, New York.

Diamonds are the hardest natural substance in the world. Herkimer Diamonds, while not as hard as natural diamonds, are stronger than manmade steel!

Diamonds may be up to three billion years old. Herkimer Diamonds are surprisingly old as well. Nearly five hundred million years ago silicon and oxygen formed these crystals inside a rock called dolomite.

True diamonds come out of the ground looking like rough glass and must be painstakingly cut. In contrast, Herkimer Diamonds come out of the ground already-faceted and sparkling bright.

Perhaps the best way Herkimer Diamonds rival true diamonds is their price! Carat for carat, Herkimers will almost always win.
