Gamma Radiation
This Science Minute was researched and written by Gabriel N., of Ithaca, NY.
Have you ever gotten sunburnt at the beach? Sunburns are caused by ultraviolet rays. We're lucky that there aren't gamma rays at the beach, because gamma rays are much stronger than ultraviolet rays!
Like X-rays, gamma rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, produced by radioactive decay.
X-rays can help doctors treat patients-but when patients are X-rayed, they must have a dense jacket of lead to protect them from harmful radiation.
Similarly, gamma rays can be helpful if they're used correctly. Gamma rays can kill bacteria and treat cancer - but they must be used with care, because they can cause burns, cancer, and birth defects.
Just be glad that you don't have to worry about gamma rays at the beach!
