Ocean Science for Rural Schools at the Sciencenter

The Triad Foundation recently awarded the Sciencenter a $60,000 grant to support the development of a new ocean science initiative at the museum for rural school districts within Tompkins County and the adjacent Cortland City School district.

Eligibility

The project will fund field trips to the Sciencenter for every second grade class from the following school districts:

  • Dryden Central School
  • Groton Central School
  • Lansing Central School
  • Newfield Central School
  • Trumansburg Central School
  • Cortland City School District

All schools in these districts will be contacted and notified of the opportunity to have all second-grade students participate in this free field trip program.

Funding

Funding will cover transportation costs, student admission and program fees, and is available starting Fall 2006.

Program

Students will explore the new exhibition Connect to the Ocean, including a 350-gallon touch tank with marine invertebrates. Through the touch tank, four related exhibits and related programming with Sciencenter staff, students will engage with introductory concepts of ecology and the importance of oceans as habitats.
